Falcon had nice weather for the first
Autotest Michael Leete had helped organise for 30 years!
Most of the tests were pretty open,
designed not to be a Mini benefit. However, it was a Mini, in the hands
of Keith Pettit that
set the early pace. Unfortunately the ex-Arnold Lane engine developed drive
problems and Keith and co-driver Jonny Tovey, had to retire before lunch.
Arnold himself had experienced problems
with his normal Autotest engine before the event and had changed it for his
old trials lump on the Saturday. Arnold was sharing the car with Martin
Cheshire and they both found the final drive a bit low on the faster tests.
There were two more Mini's in the entry,
driven by Andrew and David Wise and Peter and David Manning. All of them
struggled to put the power down in the long grass. Grip was at a premium all
day for as soon as it was flattened down the cones were moved for the next
test.
Owen Turner mastered the conditions to set
FTD ahead of Richard Tompkins in his Imp.
